Case Study: Catskill Farmhouse Goes Green and Gorgeous

When Dean and Irene Marchetto, both architects, set out to design their weekend home, they went full-bore toward a stylish, modern and eco-friendly makeover of a farm in New York’s Catskill Mountain region.

In all aspects, the Marchettos worked to put nature to work for them. Updating what used to be traditional elements of the old dairy farm, they converted the silo, for example, into a system that expels warm in the summer and traps it in the winter. And to maximize the use of natural heating in the winter, many windows were placed to allow sunlight to heat stone floors in the house. A well-placed, tree-filled courtyard blocks cold northwest winter winds while adding a nice bit of landscaping surrounded by the L-shaped house.

For more info on the Catskill farmhouse, visit this page and click “Designing Green.” Architectural Digest magazine also has a story about the Marchettos’ home and a great slideshow of photos.
