Unique decor: Etsy furniture finds

November 8th, 2011 No Comments

If you are looking for uniuqe furniture or housewares, Etsy is the place to go! This marketplace allows independent artisans and designers to sell their wares online. Here are some gorgeous furnishings we found…

Imagine crowding around this rustically beautiful table for Thanksgiving dinner! We love how the wood has kept the natural characteristics of the tree.

Walnut Natural Edge Wood Slab from jeffharden.

This vintage restored piece looks like something off of a 1930s movie set.

Antoinette Chair from ShopEla.

Who wouldn’t want to sleep in this quirky yet  gorgeous bed?!

Dingle Canopy Bed from Delia Furniture.

The curviness of this bench makes it very cool.

Decorating: Things you might not have thought of

October 4th, 2011 No Comments

Everyone has certain beliefs about decorating that they’ve heard over and over again and internalized as the truth. Sometimes though, it is good to look at things you thought weren’t the “right” way to decorate.

House Beautiful shared quite a few well-kept decorating secrets. Here are a few of our favorites. Make sure to check out the rest of the post here!

  • Don’t be afraid of the dark: A dark paint color can add depth to a small room and make it feel bigger. Not to mention, dark walls can often be quite cozy.
  • Wallpaper isn’t just for walls: House Beautiful suggests wallpapering sliding closet doors to give them a new look. Don’t forget about the inside of your closets too! A pop of wallpaper that can be seen as the door opens adds a lot of visual interest.
  • Speaking of closets…there isn’t anything worse than feeling around in a dark closet for your clothing. Put a light in there and stretch beyond the usual bare bulb on a string.
  • Go green: With plants, that is! A nice, large plant in a room adds a sense of the outdoors.

Engine Table
Design Milk
“Currently on display at Decoratum Gallery in London, the Cylinder Radial Engine Table is made from a US Army Boeing-Stearman PT-13 engine acquired from the Canadian Museum of Flight, Langley, British Columbia. Constructed between 1936 and 1938, the innovative piece features a simple clear glass top so you can see through to the complex engine workings below.”

DIY: Gemstone Cabinet Knobs
Casa Sugar
“Two decorating secrets in updating a kitchen on a dime are to change the color of the walls with a fresh coat of paint, and swap out dated cabinet knobs with new ones. In my kitchen, you don’t have to do the tedious task of unscrewing each knob to give them a fresh look. Upcycle your old knobs with a colorful collection of geodes, sea glass, or minerals and ultrapowerful glue.”

Latest installment in “Would You Put This In Your Living Room?”: Another unusual chair

May 31st, 2011 No Comments

We can add this into the collection of “innovative design but would you put it in your living room?”.  Behold this chair by Pini Leibovitch (via Design Milk). It’s part of an exhibit at Design Museum Holon in Israel and the colorful strands that make up its material are actually balloons. What do you think? Is it a wonderfully wacky conversation piece?

A new tub-shower combo

May 24th, 2011 4 Comments

While perusing the latest news on Apartment Therapy, we saw their beautiful slideshow of cool bathrooms. You should check it out! One picture in particular captivated us:

It’s a modern and chic take onthe bathroom, with what appears to be slate floors and walls, lots of natural light and a monochromatic look accentuated with pops of color.

But it’s the bath-shower that really draws attention. We love the curved showerhead that allows water to pour down like a waterfall and we especially love the sunken tub. It makes the bathroom look 10 times bigger. The eye barely registers that it is a tub-shower combination.

The one thing we wonder though: Is it safe? Without any (visible) handrails, could stepping down into the tub be more of a falling risk? What do you think? Is a sunken tub-shower combination a fresh new look for the bathroom?

Living in a castle

April 28th, 2011 No Comments

The whole world has royal wedding fever (set your DVRs for early Friday morning!), so MLuxe thought we would take a look at the residences of the British monarch and share a few pictures.

As you’ll notice, most of the decor is highly traditional, steeped in history. But the bold colors, rich textures, impeccable design and sense of place add up to a heady and memorable experience.

How would you incorporate this sort of style into your interior design? A jewel-toned velvet wallpaper with Swedish modern furniture? Gold-legged chairs to add a little grandeur to the family room? Let us know in the comments!

These are just a few of the fabulous homes the British monarchy gets to enjoy. Many (though not all) are open to the public, so if you are planning a trip to Great Britain, put these castles on your list!

Another cool chair

April 21st, 2011 No Comments

We recently showed you Karim Rashid’s very cool egg-shaped chair. In another cool chair entry, we found this this beauty on Design Milk. From Spanish company Joquer and designed by Ramón Esteve, its  space age sexiness would add interest to any room and serve as a real conversation point. It looks comfortable too! What are your opinions on bold furniture such as this?

MLuxe’s eye on wallpaper

March 8th, 2011 No Comments

Wallpaper is an amazing way to add color, texture and pattern to a room. And it doesn’t need to look like it came from your grandmother’s house — there’s all sort of fresh, modern stuff out there. Here are a few of our favorites. What sort of wallpaper do you like, and where would you choose to put it? Let us know in the comments!

Gravity (designed by Emil Kozak) from ferm LIVING
This bright blue, boldly geometric wallpaper would add oomph to any room. For an unusual twist, try it on the ceiling.

Fornasetti Collection from Cole & Son
This whimsical wallpaper would be perfect for a walk-in or entryway closet.

The Vibe from Afro Chic
Afro Chic’s funky print is surprisingly versatile and would work well in a modern living room or a girl’s bedroom.

Pure Paintable from Graham & Brown
Paintable wallpaper may sound like an oxymoron, but in reality it’s the best of both worlds. Use this wherever you want a little subtle texture in your house.

Kinky Vintage: Naughty Noir by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen from Graham & Brown
This darkly elegant flocked wallpaper is described by Graham & Brown as “Marrakesh meets Marie Antoinette”. It might be too much for every day use, but if you have a guest room you’ve been dying to experiment with, or a library/office, it could be just the ticket.
